Well aware of the delicate and thorny issues surrounding the topic or my research, its geographical focus, and the populations it involves, I diligently abide by the Code of Ethics of the American Anthropological Association approved in 1998. I also agree with the 2008 proposed revisions regarding transparency, responsiveness, and accountability to research participants during all data-gathering activities, publishing, and any other forms of data sharing that may affect them or be of their interest.

Interview/Survey
I am a graduate student in the
Department of Anthropology
at the
University of Chicago
in the United States. I am here to conduct a study that will
look at how current national security policies and concerns
affect border life and on the local perception of the U.S.
and Mexico as nation-states. I am conducting preliminary work
in order to develop a dissertation research proposal for
future investigation into these
issues.http://humansubjects.uchicago.edu/sbsirb/index.html
Before we begin, I would like to take a minute to explain why
I am inviting you to participate and what I will be doing
with the information you provide to me. Please stop me at any
time if you have any questions. After I’ve told you a
bit more about my project, you can decide whether or not you
would like to participate.
I am doing this research as part of my studies in the
Department of Anthropology at the University of Chicago. I
will be interviewing between 50 to 200 people about their
opinion of the impact of current border policing measures on
their lives and perceptions of their countries, their
communities, and their relationship to the border. These
interviews will be conducted with individuals from all kinds
of backgrounds and perspectives. I will use this information
as the basis for my Doctoral Thesis Research Proposal. I may
also use this information in articles that might be
published, as well as in academic presentations. Outside of
these formats, the taped interviews will not be shared with
anybody.
Participation should take about an hour or for as long as you
want to speak with me. Participation is on a purely voluntary
basis. You will be asked to respond to a few questions and
give me your impressions on the current social and political
environment on the border. The only potential risk from your
participation in this project is that it somebody may find
out what you say to me. In order to protect your privacy and
safety, I will only use your first name (unless you give me
permission to do otherwise). In my notes, your name will be
codified, and I may change your name for
publication/presentation purposes. This information will be
securely stored and the audiotape of this interview will be
destroyed once its contents are transcribed. Your
participation in this research will allow me to design a
dissertation research project that may contribute to the
better understanding of border communities, national
security, and international (human) rights.
If at any time and for any reason, you would prefer not to
answer any questions, please feel free not to. If at any time
you would like to stop participating, please tell me. We can
take a break, stop and continue at a later date, or stop
altogether. You will not be penalized in any way for deciding
to stop participation at any time.
I would like to tape record this interview so as to make sure
that I remember accurately all the information you provide. I
will keep these tapes under my protection at all times, and
they will only be used by me. I will not share this
information with anybody.
If you have questions, you are free to ask me at any time.
